sterling bangle

    Sterling Bangle 1885
Sterling silver is .925 fine.  This mixture of pure silver and copper has long been regarded for its fine beauty.  The word denotes quality of the highest standard.  The word sterling was coined when King James brought in a group of Germans to refine silver for making coins.  Since they were from the east, they became known as Easterlings.  When a statute concerning silver was written in 1343, the first two letters were accidentally omitted.  Hence the word sterling was first applied to silver.

Victorian Jewelry What is Victorian jewelry?
Queen Victoria of England ruled from 1837-1901.  Jewelry made during that period is called Victorian.
Cameo:  anything carved above the plane.  The opposite of cameo is intaglio.  Cameos can be carved from shell (pictured above), ivory, turquoise, coral, or hardstone. The most common cameos are ladies heads carved from shell.
Scenic images are rarer.
